When you open this year’s Tbaytel directory, you will notice a new page courtesy of the Thunder Bay Urban Aboriginal Strategy’s Access to Social Services Action Circle. The group has developed a detailed contact list to assist people in finding Aboriginal resources in Thunder Bay. The Aboriginal Resource page includes a full spectrum of listings in multiple reference categories.
Circle Chair, Melanie Tibishkogijig, says; “This resource page places essential community information directly into Thunder Bay homes and businesses. The Aboriginal population is an important and growing part of our City’s identity and the direct services that are available for our community need to be easily accessible.”
Over 80 local organizations and service agencies are listed in the Aboriginal Resource page, including crisis lines, health services, education, housing, women’s services, policing and local Band contact information.
Thunder Bay Urban Aboriginal Strategy Planner, Frances Wesley, says; “This is an important step forward in our strategy to improve communication between all people in Thunder Bay and it truly reflects the diversity of our city. It is a way to ensure information about Aboriginal organizations and services is made available to the public and it promotes the scope of Aboriginal services and organizations available in the City of Thunder Bay.”
The Access to Social Services Action Circle was formed in the spring of 2010. The Action Circle’s mission is to support Aboriginal families by bringing community partners together to share responsibility to develop strategies, ideas and projects that will better serve the Aboriginal community of Thunder Bay.
Tibishkogijig continues; “Our Circle welcomed the opportunity to work with Tbaytel on this initiative and hope we can continue this relationship in the future.”
Note to the Editor: The Thunder Bay Urban Aboriginal Strategy (TBUAS) was launched in the City of Thunder Bay in 2003, with a goal of addressing urban aboriginal family poverty.
